On Our Bicycles

On Our Bicycles is a repository of bicycle touring guides, erring on the practical rather than the creative side of cycling. It is a work in progress.

I launched it together with my then partner, Laura, in late 2023. We were doing a lot of research about how to overcome certain obstacles – border crossings in Central Asia, Chinese and Russian visa applications, ferry connections, which apps to use, and so on – and collected a lot of useful information.

So the idea was to collate and present that information in a way that could be useful to other bicycle tourists. Websites like Wikitravel and Wikivoyage are invaluable, but are of limited use for people travelling exclusively, or almost exclusively, by bicycle. And Caravanistan is a wonderful resource but, again, not always useful, since it focuses mostly on Central Asian travel.

I also have several years of bicycle touring experience that is relevant to anyone starting out on a bike tour, and I’ve worked as a freelance writer on and off for some time. Thus, On Our Bicycles was born. Visit the website by clicking here. Feel free to subscribe to it for email updates, or share it anyone to whom you think it might be useful.
